Championship giants Leeds United have reportedly enquired about the possible signing of Sporting Lisbon defender Tobias Figueiredo.
It is looking increasingly possible that Leeds United could have a new centre-back in January in the shape of Portuguese Under-23 star Tobias Figueiredo.
Desporto ao Minuto broke the news last week that the Championship giants had enquired about the Sporting Lisbon centre-back and were willing to meet the Primeira Liga side’s asking price, understood to be around £2.5 million.
Record added to the rumours on Monday when they stated that Figueiredo was not part of Sporting manager Jorge Jesus’ plans. The report claimed that an exit looked inevitable with England, intriguingly, his most likely destination.
And the 23-year-old might just have bid farewell to Sporting with the January transfer window just two weeks away. The defender made only his second senior appearance of the season in Wednesday’s 4-0 Taca de Portugal victory over lower league Vilaverdense in midweek.
Figueiredo even captained the side at the Estadio Jose Alvalade – perhaps something of a leaving present for a player who rose through the club’s famed academy system.
Sporting have a few more fixtures remaining before the end of 2017 but you wonder whether handing Figueiredo the armband is an indication that he has pulled on the famous green and white strip for the last time.
But the Iberian youngster should find first-team opportunities easier to come by at Leeds, where his aerial presence should make him a good fit for English football.
