Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon scored twice for Rafael Benitez’s side at the weekend.

Jose Salomon Rondon of Newcastle United celebrate scoring his side's first goal during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth at St. James Park on November...

Salomon Rondon’s latest comments in the Chronicle may just highlight why Rafael Benitez decided to sell Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham in the summer transfer window.

Mitrovic has scored five goals this season in the Premier League, and when he departed many Newcastle fans questioned the decision.

The Serbian looked like the most natural goalscorer in Newcastle’s squad, but he rarely impressed Benitez during his time at St. James’ Park.

And Rondon’s comments about his role may well show why Benitez did not rate the target-man.

“The work for the strikers is slightly different, and you have to hold the ball and bring people into play,” Rondon said.

“You can run with the ball, too. I have to hold the ball up, that’s my job; to find my team-mates to help them play.”

It is fair to say that Mitrovic’s strengths do not lie in his ability to bring others into play.

The Serbian may be a physical presence, but he generally works best in the penalty box rather than in deeper areas of the pitch.

Benitez ultimately felt Rondon was a better option for Newcastle than Rondon, and the Venezuelan started to prove his manager correct at the weekend.

Rondon scored twice for Newcastle, as they edged past Bournemouth to pick up their second win of the season.
