Celtic were knocked out of the Europa League by Zenit St Petersburg so has Brendan Rodgers taken the club as far as he can as manager?

Celtic exited the Europa League at the last-32 stage following a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Zenit St Petersburg, ending their European dreams for another year.

Having taken a 1-0 lead into the second-leg in Russia there was a positive feeling that the Bhoys could progress to the next round, but Zenit were too strong on the night.

The Glasgow outfit are still looking comfortable domestically and could complete an unprecedented double treble having already won the Scottish League Cup, playing Greenock Norton in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on March 3 and with a nine-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Yet is there already a feeling that Brendan Rodgers has taken the club as far as he can as manager, with the former Liverpool and Swansea City boss admitting in December that he had received offers from the Premier League.

“Yes, I have been aware of possibilities, as have the club,” Rodgers was quoted by the Daily Mail. “But it’s not on my radar at all. The process of how I heard doesn’t matter so much.

“The Premier League is brilliant. I loved it there. I worked with two great clubs. This is not to say I won’t go back there one day, but there’s not even a notion that I’m thinking of it (at the moment).

“My ambition is for Celtic. I’m not worried about myself and my own ambition. I want to sustain the level of success for as long as I can.”

These comments and the fact that Rodgers signed a new four-year contract at Parkhead last April would suggest the 45-year-old is committed to his current team.

Perhaps the Northern Irishman believes he can bring European glory back to Celtic in the coming years and with his huge ambition that could well be the case.

However, Rodgers does want to get back to the top of English football having come so close to winning the title with the Reds in 2013/14 and perhaps there is a feeling he has achieved all he has already sustained the “level of success” for as long as he can.
