Glasgow Rangers’ need to bring Russell Martin to Ibrox has stepped up a notch after Bruno Alves’ injury.

Alves posted a picture on Instagram of his leg in crutches, and SkySports report he is set for another lay-off, his third spell on the sidelines this season.

It ramps up Rangers’ need to sign Norwich City’s Russell Martin, following interest in the defender which has been cited over the past 48 hours.

The Times report Martin is ready to move back to Scotland amid interest from Rangers and is out of favour at Norwich.

Martin has represented Scotland at international level and would immediately strengthen Rangers’ backline.

Youngster David Bates stepped in for Alves against Celtic, but the Portuguese’ injury leaves Rangers with limited options.

Even if Alves can return next month, he has been shown to be far from reliable this season, and at 36-years-old Rangers need to have alternatives.

Martin is reportedly available on loan but he has no future at Norwich, and a temporary deal for the centre-back can turn into a permanent one.

Getting him on board has become more essential than it was before, and if Rangers act swiftly they can get a deal done in time for him to fly out to Florida on their pre-season tour.
