Ibrox outfit Rangers should challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season, suggests Dave King.

Rangers chairman Dave King has told The Herald that he wants the club to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.
The Gers have been unable to push the Hoops for the league title this season and may not even end up second in the standings.
Pedro Caixinha was appointed the Rangers manager earlier this month following the departure of Mark Warburton in February.
Rangers chairman King has stated that he wants the Ibrox outfit to challenge Celtic in Caixinha’s first season in charge of the Gers.
“I still think that we must challenge Celtic, as I expected to do this year,” King told The Herald. “Aberdeen challenged them and got to within five or six weeks. It certainly wasn’t the race it was this year.
“I would like us to challenge Celtic. Does it mean win the title next year? Of course it doesn’t.
“But I would like to challenge Celtic and see some distance between ourselves and Aberdeen and Hearts because again investment will be made to do that.”
Set for failure?
King’s comments may be encouraging for the Rangers fans, but the problem is that competing with Celtic is easier said than done.
Caixinha is a very good manager and he could sign some decent players in the summer transfer window, and that would certainly help.
While closing the gap on Celtic next season is important, the Portuguese should be given time to build the team in his own image.
Making claims such as challenging Celtic are only going to increase pressure on Caixinha.
