Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has admitted to the Shields Gazette that his squad lacks experience.

Newcastle threw away a two goal lead against Bournemouth in the last 10 minutes at the weekend, as they let a crucial victory slip from their grasp.

And Benitez has admitted that the Magpies’ squad’s lack of top flight knowhow proved very costly.

“There have been times where we have lacked a bit of quality and experience in the final third, and we haven’t always managed things well enough,” Benitez said.

“But that’s what happens when you’re at this level and you play against very good players.

“Our team is a young team, and we need a little bit more experience in how to manage situations like this.”

Benitez’s comments suggest that experienced players could be high up on Newcastle’s wishlist, if they stay in the Premier League.

Newcastle are far from guaranteed to survive in the top flight, but they remain clear of danger as things stand.

And if the Magpies are to ensure they stay out of trouble next term, they will surely want more experienced added.

Benitez will, of course, need to be given money to spend if he is to bring in experienced players in the summer, but if he is handed funds then it seems players with a history of playing Premier League football will be targeted.

Newcastle currently have one of the youngest squads in the top flight, and having some more experienced players to guide them, could be future for their development over future years at St. James’ Park.
