Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy must be feeling the pressure right now.
Not only does he have the club’s unfinished stadium to ensure gets ready as soon as possible, but now there is intensified speculation over Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino’s future.
The Times report Manchester United have him as their top target to replace Jose Mourinho at the end of the season, with an interim set to be hired in the meantime.
Pochettino has been working on a budget at Tottenham. This would not be the case at United.
At Spurs, Pochettino has worked wonders, but he so far he has not been able to get them over the finish line to win a trophy.
Pochettino was asked about the rumours at his press conference. He didn’t exactly reject them.
Asked about his future, he told The Telegraph: “I cannot answer this type of question.”
Perhaps instead of leaving the door open to later join United, Pochettino is simply using his leverage.
Tottenham’s best chance of persuading him to stay will be hand him a sizeable transfer budget in January, showing he does not need to leave the club.
Pochettino is a smart man. It would not be a surprise if he is one step ahead of Daniel Levy.
The more the remains neutral over the rumours and keeps his chairman guessing, the more likely he is to be blessed with funds to strengthen the team and make his current job easier.
