West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere underwent ankle surgery this week after reportedly feeling discomfort last week in training, and a spell on the sidelines could highlight a huge blunder in the transfer window.

West Ham confirmed on their official website that the 26-year-old underwent surgery in London on Monday morning and is now expected to be on the sidelines for quite some time.

He is expected to be given time to rest and recover before undergoing a rehabilitation process. It is unclear when exactly he will return to action for the club he signed for this summer.

England international Wilshere is renowned for his injury problems and although it seems as if the worst of it is behind him, this setback will do the former Arsenal star no favours in looking to shake off his injury-prone reputation.

The Hammers and Manuel Pellegrini now have just Pedro Obiang, Mark Noble, Declan Rice and Carlos Sanchez to choose from in central midfield, but all four are renowned for their defensive work rather than getting forward.

With Manuel Lanzini sidelined for the majority of the 2018-19 season, West Ham lack the kind of player to connect the midfield and attack following Wilshere’s injury.

Indeed, Pellegrini will surely be ruing his decision to allow Edimilson Fernandes to join Fiorentina on a season-long loan, as well as agreeing to let Josh Cullen move to Charlton Athletic.

Both loan stars are more than capable of getting forward to join the attack, much like Wilshere does. But without all three, West Ham are without the attacking connection from deep.

Wilshere’s injury, then, highlights a hole in the middle of the park that Pellegrini really should have planned for – given Wilshere’s track record when it comes to inury.
