Has Pau Lopez just lost his only realistic chance of a first-team debut at Tottenham this season?

Tottenham Hotspur have two very strong goalkeepers ahead of the summer signing in the pecking order.

Tottenham Hotspur ultimately had an eventful summer transfer window, but of all their additions the loan signing of goalkeeper Pau Lopez seemed the most confusing.

After all, Spurs already had Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm on their books so what chance did the 21-year-old have of breaking through in the short term?

Of course, Lopez is very much one for the future and Tottenham’s loan move could have been more to secure a permanent signing ahead of other interested parties next summer than anything else. But having finally got into Spurs’ match-day squad for their EFL Cup clash with Liverpool, the Spaniard could have just seen his only realistic route to the first-team ended before it has begun.

Tottenham’s elimination from the EFL Cup means they will now be focusing on the Premier League and the Champions League until January, at which point Vorm is likely to take the gloves for their FA Cup campaign.

If that is the case, and Tottenham continue to fight for trophies until the business end of the campaign, Lopez is unlikely to get the chance to show what he can do on the field.

What he does in training could ultimately be enough to convince Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino to sign him permanently. However it looks like Lopez may already have to wait until at least next season to make his first-team debut…and only then if he remains at White Hart Lane.
