Ralph Hasenhuttl discloses something Southampton fans may not have known about Yan Valery

The Saints academy graduate has impressed in the Premier League in his breakthrough season at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has spoken very highly of rising academy star Yan Valery following his breakthrough season at St Mary’s Stadium in which he impressed in the first team amid their successful Premier League survival battle.

The 20-year-old joined the Saints from French club Stade Rennais in 2015 and rose through the ranks of the Premier League outfit before being handed his debut in the season just gone.

On 27 November 2018, ex-boss Mark Hughes selected Valery to feature the Carabao Cup match against Leicester City and, four days later, the Frenchman made his league debut, playing the full 90 minutes of the 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

Valery has gone from strength to strength this term, making 23 appearances in the Premier League (Transfermarkt) as one of several academy graduates that have been utilised extensively by Hasenhuttl, and with preparations under way for 2019-20, he disclosed just how much work the youngster puts in.

“What nobody sees is that he’s working every day with our coaches, even if he’s off. That is his secret; he has amazing physical attributes and he has a strong desire to work on his weaknesses,” the Austrian said of Valery to the Southampton media team.

Valery, who has been capped at Under-17 and Under-18 level for France (Transfermarkt), signed a new contract in March this year which ties him to the St Mary’s Stadium outfit until the summer of 2023 (official website).
