Odsonne Edouard’s stunning hat-trick for Celtic vs Motherwell couldn’t be better timed with the January window just around the corner.
Just when doubts were starting to be heard about Odsonne Edouard, the Celtic striker exploded into life with a stunning hat-trick against Motherwell.
In the third game in succession against Stephen Robinson’s side, Celtic scored five in a comfortable home win – with Edouard the undoubted star of the show. The teenage striker had only started two Scottish Premiership games before Well came to Parkhead on Saturday but seized his chance in style by taking his tally to four goals for The Hoops.
And manager Brendan Rodgers hinted after the game that Celtic could indeed take up their option to sign the France youth star on a permanent deal at the end of this season – not long after The Scotsman claimed that a longer stay in Scottish football seemed unlikely with Edouard yet to make the expected impact.
And Edouard’s starring performance could hardly have been better timed with the January transfer window just a month away. Celtic have been linked with a number of strikers, The Mail even claiming that the red-hot, £10 million-rated Red Star Belgrade goal machine Richmond Boakye was on their radar.
But if Edouard can build on this most promising of performances, there will be no reason for Celtic to make any big offers in the New Year. The 19-year-old may have just saved Celtic a rather substantial chunk of their financial reserves.
Edouard, a prolific goalscorer for PSG’s youth sides and the eight-goal Golden Ball winner at the Under-17 World Cup, has always had the potential. Now the aim is to show off his talent on a more consistent basis.
