Gareth Southgate was watching Everton against Newcastle United, but Jonjo Shelvey failed to stand out.

Gareth Southgate was on Merseyside on Monday to take in Everton versus Newcastle United, seemingly giving Jonjo Shelvey one last chance to impress.

The Newcastle midfielder has been in fine form of late, running the game against the likes of Manchester United, Leicester City and Arsenal.

And so after boosting his chances of a World Cup call-up, it was imperative that Shelvey delivered in front of England boss Southgate.

But the former Liverpool man was largely anonymous at Goodison Park, struggling to stamp his authority on the match as he has done in recent weeks.

In fact, in the context of 2018, this was one of Shelvey’s worst performances.

Southgate’s judgement should not be affected by just one match, but he is undoubtedly more likely to make a decision on a game he has seen live than one that he has not. Shelvey must wish the England manager had been at any other clash in recent weeks.

Newcastle and potential England teammate Jamaal Lascelles was slightly more impressive, winning a number of headers in the air and keeping the ball as the Magpies built momentum in the second half.

But he showed in the first half that he is not particularly comfortable on the ball; at odds with what Southgate wants from his defenders.

All in all, it was a miserable evening for Newcastle’s English contingent.
