The West Ham United goalkeeper is linked with Newcastle United.
Linked-away West Ham United man Adrian has told the club’s official website that he intends to compete with Joe Hart for the number one shirt this season.
The 30-year-old’s future in East London has been plunged into doubt over the past week after West Ham pulled off a major coup to sign Hart on a season-long loan.
Consequently, it has been suggested that the Spaniard may be deemed to surplus to requirements, with The Chronicle reporting that Newcastle United are in talks to sign him.
However, Adrian, who played a blinder in the club’s 1-0 friendly defeat to Werder Bremen on Friday, told West Ham’s official website that he is “excited” for the new season and suggests that he will battle the England international for Slaven Bilic’s affections.
He said: “Everyone is excited for the season, so we will try to give our best always when we play together. This is pre-season and we have time to learn to make no more mistakes and to win games.
“Joe is a great ‘keeper and is an international for England he brings great competition. He is a great worker and, like everyone, we are both training very well.
“We have a lot of competition in goal this season, so I will try to give my best and we will see the manager’s decision.”
Newcastle need a new goalkeeper, with Karl Darlow – linked to West Ham – and Tim Krul heavily expected to leave the Magpies this summer.
That would leave Rob Elliot as Rafael Benitez’s only senior option between the sticks and the Newcastle boss is expected to change that by signing decent competition.
Based on these comments, though, Adrian might not be his man.
