The curious case of Celtic centre-back Marvin Compper.

The last time Celtic fans saw Marvin Compper, he was dancing around the pitch at Parkhead and carrying the Scottish Premiership trophy as he and his team-mates did their lap of honour.

By virtue of the fact that he’s been one of the most bizarre signings in the modern history of Celtic, it was also the first time that many supporters had clocked eyes on the centre-back who joined 18 months ago.

And if Neil Lennon’s comments are anything to go by, it looks like that day at Paradise, when the German defender hogged the trophy despite not playing a single minute of football last season, may be their last memory of the mythical Compper.

Lennon, speaking to The Scottish Sun on Sunday, revealed his intention to sign another defender this summer after bringing in Christopher Jullien for £7 million.

He said: “We will possibly need another centre-half too. We are running with Kris Ajer, Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry at the moment. So we may have to add another but Jullien is coming as number one — he’s that sort of signing.”

The Northern Irishman named every senior Hoops defender on the books, except poor Compper and it looks like he inadvertently confirmed the obvious: the former Leipzig star has absolutely no role to play this season.

It seems like the end of the line for the 34-year-old, who managed 83 minutes in total – against Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup – since moving to Glasgow in January of 2018.

But whether Celtic can get rid of him is another thing, given that he remains contracted to the Bhoys until next summer.
