Hartlepool winger Nathan Thomas has reportedly signed for Sheffield United – not long after loan star Jay O’Shea surprisingly rejected a contract at Brammal Lane.

Few expected Jay O’Shea to reject the offer of a new two-year contract at Sheffield United. The winger arrived on loan from Chesterfield in January and played an important role in The Blades’ cruise towards the Championship.
Consequently, The Star reports that manager Chris Wilder jumped at the chance to offer O’Shea a permanent deal – only for him to turn it down amid speculation he could reunite with former Chesterfield boss Paul Cook at interested suitors Wigan Athletic.
The former Birmingham City youngster’s decision looks all the more surprising when you consider that, after clinching promotion to the Championship, O’Shea claimed that signing for United permanently would be a ‘dream move’, as reported by the Derbyshire Times.

The question, however, is whether Nathan Thomas will be a suitable replacement. The Star reports that Sheffield United have signed the Hartlepool United prospect on a three-year contract after agreeing a £300,000 deal.
Described as ‘outstanding’ by Wilder after netting nine goals for the relegated Pool last season, Thomas nonetheless must prove his worth quickly after stepping up two divisions.

On his day, the 22-year-old is an irrepressible attacking force but he certainly remains a raw talent, albeit one with the potential to thrive at Championship level.
And, on paper, Sheffield United may have compensated for the sudden departure of a 28-year-old who has played only two Championship games in his entire career with a much younger model who appears to be improving by the week.

The Blades have certainly made the best out of O’Shea’s exit.
