In what circumstances at this point will Tottenham hand Moussa Sissoko a reprieve?
Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko comes on as a substitute to replace Son Heung-min
Reports in France this week have suggested Moussa Sissoko is likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
L’Equipe reported Sissoko is to hold talks with the club next month, but feels he has no future at Spurs while Mauricio Pochettino is head coach.
With the discontent clear, it is fair to wonder if the 27-year-old has started his last match for the club already.
He has made only six Premier League starts all season, the last of these came on December 28 against Southampton.
Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko
In 2017 he has begun just three games, FA Cup matches against Aston Villa and Wycombe, and a Europa League defeat away to Gent.
Now out of the Europa League, no more opportunities in that competition remain, while in the FA Cup, Spurs have a Wembley semi-final against Chelsea. Even Sissoko himself would be surprised if he was handed a start.
Tottenham have plenty to play for in the Premier League too. While they sit a comfortable second in the league, one slip up will have them worried, and after last season’s late collapse they will know they cannot afford to take their foot off the gas.
There are no easy games left for Tottenham to rotate, and with tension behind the scenes, Sissoko may not get another opportunity.
One possibility is the April 15 home game against Bournemouth, if Mauricio Pochettino wants to experiment one week ahead of the FA Cup final.
