Unless investment is made, it’s hard to see how much more McCarthy can do at Portman Road.

After Ipswich Town’s 1-1 Championship draw with East Anglian rivals Norwich City – leaving the Canaries unbeaten in eight games against Ipswich – it became apparent that the Tractor Boys are set for a mid-table season.
While Ipswich more than held their own and did the ugly things required to secure a point against a play-off chasing side, it’s clear that investment is needed at Portman Road if the club are to progress.
Manager Mick McCarthy has now taken Ipswich as far as he can on a shoestring budget and having to deal with key players being sold, and the club are now 16 points behind sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday.
It must be incredibly frustrating for McCarthy, who turned Ipswich into a play-off challenging team despite the limitations, as it will feel like all his hard work has been swept away.

But for McCarthy’s managerial qualities, it’s possible that Ipswich would be in a relegation battle this season, so you’d think the hierarchy at Portman Road would want to keep McCarthy in the dugout.
However, unless they back McCarthy financially and let him replace the likes of Daryl Murphy properly, it’ll only be a matter of time before their frugal approach comes back to haunt them.
