This winter’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be the eighth consecutive World Cup that Mexico has participated in.
Former Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino is in charge of the North America nation, and El Tri will face Saudi Arabia, Poland and Argentina in Group C in Qatar.
Martino will have to find a way of stopping former Barcelona ace Lionel Messi and current Blaugrana star Robert Lewandowski from weaving their magic against his side.
It looks like Mexico will be heading to Qatar without their own all-time top scorer forming part of their travelling party.

Despite being El Tri’s all-time top scorer with 52 goals, Javier Hernandez is set to be one of the big-name absentees from this winter’s showpiece in Qatar, as Martino has already confirmed that the former Manchester United striker won’t be considered for selection.
Mexico’s participation in a ninth consecutive World Cup is already assured with them set to host the 2026 tournament with USA and Canada.
But ahead of this winter’s tournament, which is being held in the Middle East, HITC Sport explores whether Mexico has ever won the World Cup?
Has Mexico ever won the World Cup?
While it is likely to be a straight fight between Poland and Mexico to join Argentina in the last-16 from Group C, Mexico will fancy their chances of reaching the knockout stages in their eighth consecutive World Cup.

In Russia 2018, Juan Carlos Osorio’s Mexico side were beaten 2-0 by Brazil in the last-16.
In Brazil 2014, Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands came from behind to beat Mexico 2-1 and advance to the quarter-finals thanks to a 95th-minute penalty from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar after Wesley Sneijder equalised in the 88th-minute.
In 2006 and 2010, Mexico was knocked out by Argentina. In Germany 2006, Maxi Rodriguez scored the winner in extra-time to give the La Albiceleste a 2-1 win.
Mexico will be hoping to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the third time in their history this winter.

In 1970 and 1986 they reached the last eight before being knocked out by Italy and West Germany respectfully.
Runs to the last eight came when Mexico hosted the tournament, so that could be a lucky omen for El Tri, ahead of the 2026 tournament.
In 1970 and 1986 after seeing off Mexico, both Italy and Germany went on win the World Cup.
