Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has suggested he could be starting Luke Amos in the season opener.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino may just have offered a hint that a central midfielder is no longer on his transfer wishlist.
Pochettino has suggested that Amos could start Tottenham’s first game of the Premier League season against Newcastle United, after impressing on pre-season tour.
He told the Daily Mail: “Luke Amos is a good example. He played three games (on tour) and maybe he doesn’t have experience of the Premier League but he showed in the three games that this is not a problem. Maybe he’s going to play before a senior player. I am more than brave.”
And if Spurs had plans to sign a central midfielder, then Amos may not have had such a strong chance of starting.
Tottenham are set to be without Victor Wanyama, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Mousa Dembele on the opening day – leaving their midfield options looking short.
If Spurs were planning on bringing in a central midfielder, it surely would have been the ideal time for Pochettino to bring him into the first-team.
But it seems that Amos’ form over pre-season may have done enough to convince Pochettino that signing a new central midfielder is no longer needed.
And Tottenham fans are now facing the very real prospect of their side not making a signing all summer.
