Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly interested in signing the Brazilian last month.
Bordeaux ace Malcom sat down for an exclusive interview with French media outlet Telefoot, and admitted that he wanted to leave the Ligue 1 side in the summer, following strong links with moves to Tottenham and Arsenal.
Spurs were allegedly monitoring the 20-year-old’s situation throughout the course of the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mail, but were eventually put off by his £45 million price-tag.
Mauricio Pochettino ended up bringing Lucas Moura to the club instead, for £25 million, although there is no reason why the Lilywhites should not renew their interest in the Bordeaux man this summer, especially after his comments to the French media.
Malcom sat down for an exclusive interview with Telefoot, and admitted that he wanted to leave last month, whilst hinting that this could be his last season with the club:
“I wanted to leave, I tell the truth. It’s my dream to progress in my career. I spoke with the president – he told me that he knew it was my dream, but that he needed me. I told him he could count on me until the end. I will do everything to bring Bordeaux to the top six in Ligue 1. I know I can do better. I will try to do everything because I like Bordeaux. I will give everything until the end to show that I stayed to help and do better.”
Spurs are due to move into their new 61,000 capacity stadium next season, and whether there will be substantial funds available to Pochettino remains to be seen, with overheads for their new home likely to account for the majority of the club’s finances.
Malcom is a real talent, though, and Tottenham should not hesitate to bring him to north London, if the chance to do so presents itself.
