The Leeds United midfielder would have been hoping to continue his run in the squad.
When Leeds United signed former Liverpool academy player Madger Gomes back in the summer, those who knew of the youngster’s potential hailed it as a fine piece of business, and he wasted little time impressing during pre-season.
Once the competitive action kicked off, the 20-year-old had to make do with a few EFL Cup appearances, playing 20 minutes against Port Vale and the full 90 minutes against Newport County before taking his place on the bench last time out against Burnley.
The Leeds youngster would have been hoping to keep that record going when the Whites take on Leicester City in the fourth round of the competition this evening. However his inclusion for the under-23s just 24 hours previously – where he played the full match against Huddersfield Town – suggests he will not be part of the first-team squad to face the Foxes.
Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen could still spring a surprise but it seems unlikely, and that would be a shame for a player who showed glimpses of his exciting talent both over the summer and in the early rounds of the competitions.
Leeds will want to make it into the latter stages of the competition after their dramatic win against Burnley but a place on the bench is the least Gomes deserves, especially if the Whites opt to play three midfielders from the start once again.
