Leeds United signed the youngster following his release from Liverpool earlier this summer.
When Leeds United first announced the arrival of former Liverpool midfielder Madger Gomes, it was stated on their official website that he would begin his Whites career with the under-23s “with a view to training with the first-team”.
However, after just three pre-season friendlies, the 20-year-old is staking a claim to be fast-tracked into Thomas Christiansen’s plans as early as the opening day of the campaign.
It should be noted that the level of opposition Leeds have faced so far means fans should not go overboard when it comes to Gomes’s impact. That said, he has done everything asked of him, making his mark in three consecutive victories and, against North Ferriby United in particular, looking every inch a star in the making.
Gomes was highly regarded at Anfield, and he modeled his game on Liverpool great Steven Gerrard, so it is no surprise he looked good against Leeds’ lower league opponents.
The trick now is to transfer that form into the upcoming matches during Leeds’ tour of Austria, and if he continues to shine the Whites’ new boss may struggle to overlook him when the competitive action kicks off next month.
While no one expected Gomes to be starting week in, week out for some time yet, he already looks to be a fine option off the bench and for cup matches, and that is more than was initially suggested when he arrived.
Just like Ronaldo Vieira before him, Leeds’ new signing is proving that age and inexperience do not matter if you have the innate talent and the confidence to perform when it matters.
