While Celtic have had a few defensive issues this season, their manager Brendan Rodgers has seemingly beenn reluctant to call on youngster Kristoffer Ajer.

The player himself recently admitted that he was not expecting many chances at Celtic Park in the current campaign. But he clearly seized the opportunity to impress when he was called on from the start against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

With the Bhoys only managing a 1-1 draw it was a disappointing afternoon for the reigning champions, although Ajer’s performance was a big positive, both for him personally and for the boss who clearly now knows his faith will be rewarded in the future.

Ajer’s only other league start came against the same opponents back in August yet he is unlikely to have to wait anywhere near as long for his third start after doing practically everything right this weekend.

Celtic have matches coming thick and fast in a number of different competitions and Ajer will be needed on many more occasions in the months ahead.

While Nir Bitton continues to be the go-to man when Celtic need a replacement for one of their recognised centre-backs, his defensive partner on Saturday could soon leapfrog the Israel international, and rightly so.
