The Tottenham Hotspur defender is down the pecking order with little chance of a reprieve.
When Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer stepped in for injured teammate Jan Vertonghen last season it looked like Spurs had a new fan favourite, with the Austrian looking impressive from the outset.
But things have not followed suit this season, and with just four games remaining the 24-year-old has featured only five times for Tottenham and just 10 times in all competitions.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently four points behind leaders Chelsea with 12 points to play for, and as long as Tottenham are in the race do not expect the Argentine to make any significant changes to his starting XI.
That could mean Wimmer has already played his last match for the club, with Tottenham doing fine without him and the former Cologne man at a point in his career when he needs to be playing week in, week out.
Of course Pochettino could still have big plans for Wimmer, yet all the time Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier remain at White Hart Lane, with other defenders tipped to follow, the Austrian’s prospects look slim at best.
It may be better for all concerned if he leaves in the summer, joining a club where he can prove his worth on a regular basis, not just as a rarely seen back-up option.
