Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld was reportedly on Manchester United’s radar in the summer transfer window.

According to The Manchester Evening News, Manchester United were interested in signing Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Nothing materialised, and Alderweireld is still at Tottenham, although the Belgium international central defender has yet to sign a new contract.

The 29-year-old centre-back is one of the best in his position, and there will always be speculation on his future, especially as he has not committed his long-term future to the North London outfit.

United manager Mourinho – who has won the Premier League title with Chelsea and the Champions League with FC Porto and Inter Milan – has been asked about Alderweireld, and the former Chelsea boss’s comments make for an interesting read.

The Manchester Evening News quotes Mourinho as saying when it was mentioned to him that Alderweireld had not committed to Spurs: “It’s very hard for me to go for names in that sense. I went for names that everybody knows are impossible names.

“It’s easier to say we cannot buy Eden Hazard or we cannot buy [Sergio] Aguero than to speak about names where the general feeling is there is a chance [he could leave]. I cannot go in that direction.”

Rekindling interest in January?

Mourinho could have said that he will not try for Alderweireld in the January transfer window, but that the United manager did not suggests that he still harbours hopes of bringing the defender to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are not exactly bad defensively, but a player of Alderweireld is certainly going to make the Premier League club a better team.
