Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier has been linked with the Ibrox exit during the January transfer window.
Amongst the plaudits that came Rangers’ way following their stunning Old Firm win was the suggestion that the Ibrox faithful had probably just seen James Tavernier’s best performance for the Gers.
Tavernier put in a superb display. It was almost easy to forget that Scott Sinclair was on the pitch as the right-back not only managed to keep him out of the game, but also asked plenty of questions going forward as he linked up brilliantly with Daniel Candeias.
The Englishman has somewhat divided the supporters for much of his spell. But he has unquestionably stepped up since he was given the captain’s armband, and subsequently improved further following Steven Gerrard’s appointment.
And his progress culminated in a virtually flawless Old Firm display.
But that has surely made Rangers’ task in January much tougher.
Sky Sports reported in October that Brighton were considering a move for Tavernier this month having previously looked at the former Wigan man. The report added that West Brom had several bids rejected in the summer.
After the performance that he put in against Celtic, it is difficult to imagine that Brighton would not want to step up their interest, and that several other sides would not have been impressed by how Tavernier played and led the side.
Rangers are in a strong position given Tavernier signed a new four-year deal in September (via BBC Sport), but any speculation will probably not do them any favours, especially after such a massive win in their season.
