His £12m fee is deceiving, Jacob Murphy needs time to develop at Newcastle and has shown in recent times he has the potential to succeed.

It would be a struggle to find a Newcastle United fan who thought their summer transfer business was a success, especially as manager Rafa Benitez was left unhappy himself – as reported by the Independent.

Unfortunately for Jacob Murphy, who was their most expensive acquisition that window after completing a £12m (BBC) switch from Norwich City, that has placed an unfair burden on his shoulders.

The other unfortunate thing for Murphy is that the 22-year-old still needs time to develop having only had one full Championship season under his belt before the step up to the Premier League.

Therefore despite his price-tag the winger is not going to be the match-winner week in, week out for the Magpies and that has led some to become frustrated with the England Under-21 international.

However, despite Newcastle’s poor run of six defeats from their last seven matches, this has coincided with Murphy regularly being in the starting XI and the wideman has been one of the few positives during a torrid spell.

Although the Englishman is yet to register a goal or assist since arriving at St James’ Park, his performances over the past five fixtures have been encouraging and suggests that with a bit of patience and guidance from Benitez, the former Norwich man could well become a key player for the Toon.
