Sunderland are third in the League One table right now but there’s a couple of areas in which they could potentially strengthen.

Sunderland are in an excellent position right now as they look to seal an immediate return to the Championship. The Black Cats have slowly but surely found their feet under Jack Ross and are now third in the League One table, three points adrift of leaders Portsmouth with a game in hand.

And the fact that Sunderland have forced their way into the title-race is even more impressive when you consider the lack of attacking options at the former St Mirren boss’ disposal.

Josh Maja and Jerome Sinclair are the only natural centre-forwards available to Sunderland right now with academy graduate Duncan Watmore and big summer signing Charlie Wyke both on the sidelines with long-term injuries.

And, speaking to The Chronicle, Ross has dropped a major hint about Sunderland’s January transfer plans, suggesting that a striker will be at the top of his wishlist should Watmore and Wyke fail to recover in the near future.

“Some of (the January plans) will hinge on where Duncan and Charlie are. If those two return fit and healthy in forward areas then we are OK,” Ross said.

The lively and energetic Watmore would add a spark to Sunderland’s attack when fit while Wyke is proven at League One level, having scored 15 times in the third tier for Bradford City last season.

But if Watmore or Wyke are forced to endure prolonged spells in the treatment room, expect the title-chasing Sunderland to devote all their efforts into signing a striker capable of taking the goal-scoring burden of Maja and co.
