The 20-year-old received his new contract at Spurs today.

Tottenham Hotspur announced earlier today that they had handed a new long-term deal to young midfielder Harry Winks.

The 20-year-old has signed on a five-year extension at White Hart Lane – in a true show of faith from the Spurs management team in his ability.

But has he usurped fellow midfield talent Tom Carroll in the midfield pecking order?

It would appear so. Winks has featured in the matchday squads on three occasions for Spurs this season whilst Carroll has featured in just one.

Carroll, 24, has four years on Winks but in comparing the two it would be hard to single out any areas, other than experience, that Carroll betters the younger model.

Both are similar players but Winks is more aggressive and was the more impressive of the pair throughout pre-season.

With age taken into consideration it would make sense that Winks will continue to improve and go on to be a better player than Carroll for Tottenham Hotspur. Some might even say he already is.

Carroll, like Ryan Mason, Alex Pritchard and Nabil Bentaleb did, may be running out of time to prove himself worthy at Tottenham Hotspur.

For Winks, the journey is just beginning.
