Rangers could and probably should have recorded another Premiership victory last night.
But Steven Gerrard’s side were held to a 1-1 draw away to St Johnstone, who equalised in the dying stages after a penalty from Liam Craig.
And speaking to The Scottish Sun afterwards, the Rangers boss said: “As a group, we have been really good this season with our game management and parking our ego up in the final moments of the game. Unfortunately tonight we paid for it.”
You could be forgiven for thinking the Rangers manager was throwing a bit of shade at Kemar Roofe when he referred to ‘parking our ego’.
That’s because Roofe, a £4 million signing by the Ibrox club last summer, tried to score from the halfway line toward the end of the game.
And when the hosts got possession, they wound up scoring from it.
It’s worth noting that Roofe has scored from a similar distance this season and in a much bigger game – a Europa League clash with Standard Liege – but had the 28-year-old just kept the ball, the light Blues more than likely would’ve won.
Of course, it hasn’t cost Rangers a huge amount because they’re already champions of Scotland, but Gerrard’s man-management has been spot-on this season, often shielding players from criticism irrespective of whether they deserve it or not.
But on this occasion it does look like Gerrard was a little bit frustrated with Roofe’s decision making – and ego.
