Marley Watkins was linked with a move to Leeds United, but has joined Norwich City instead.
Garry Monk’s decision to leave Leeds United may have already proved costly in a transfer sense, following Marley Watkins’ decision to sign for Norwich City.
Leeds were said to be very interested in snapping up Watkins from Barnsley (Daily Mail), following the expiration of his contract at Oakwell.
However, Monk’s departure has meant that Leeds’ plans for next season have been thrown into turmoil.
And that could have provided Norwich with an advantage in the race for the 26-year-old’s signature, which they duly seized.
Indeed Norwich’s sporting director Stuart Webber has told the club’s official website that his side had to fend off competition to sign Watkins.
“We fought off really stiff competition to bring him here so I’m delighted,” Webber said. “He scores all types of goals and is tactically very good.
“We’re really pleased to have got the deal over the line and are looking forward to working with him.”
Leeds are still looking for a new manager, following Monk’s departure, with sections of the Elland Road crowd becoming frustrated.
Leeds still have plenty of time before the new season starts up, but they cannot afford to get left behind by their Championship rivals.
Leeds are known to be on the look out for a new striker, but Watkins’ decision to move to Norwich, means that their initial plan has been scuppered.
