Has door now been shut on Rangers signing Dominic Solanke?

Glasgow Rangers were reportedly hoping to bring Dominic Solanke to Ibrox during the summer.

Although Rangers are the top goalscorers in the Scottish Premiership this season and have scored 10 goals in their last two games, it is little surprise that Steven Gerrard is apparently prioritising signing a new striker in January.

The Daily Express recently reported that a new goalscorer is at the top of Gerrard’s wishlist. It makes sense given how ineffective the Gers looked when they could not call upon Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty for the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

And it would also not surprise the Rangers faithful if the striker target at the forefront of Gerrard’s mind is Dominic Solanke. The London Evening Standard reported that the Light Blues were one of the sides to make a move for the Liverpool man in the summer, only to see their offer rejected.

A loan move in January appears to make sense for the Reds and Solanke himself. The forward – who earns £25,000-a-week at Anfield, according to Spotrac – has not featured this term after making 21 Premier League appearances last season.

However, based on reports emerging over the weekend, perhaps it would be fair to suggest that Rangers may have missed their chance to land Solanke for the rest of the season.

The Sun reported that West Ham and Crystal Palace were both eyeing loan deals for the former Chelsea striker.

If Jurgen Klopp still believes that Solanke can make the grade with Liverpool and the Reds receive assurances from either of the two clubs that he will get a certain amount of game-time, then it makes less sense to send him to Ibrox.

With Rangers, like Liverpool, he would be playing in a side that should be looking to dominant most teams in their division so that could be beneficial. But the Hammers and Palace would obviously hand him the chance to gain more Premier League experience.

And as the pair could surely offer more money than the Gers, it may well take all of Gerrard’s powers of persuasion to convince Klopp to loan him Solanke in January if he does remain a target for the Rangers boss.
