Russell Martin really struggled during his time at Scottish Premiership giants Rangers and is now without a club after West Brom turned him down.
Russell Martin will not be remembered too fondly for his time at Rangers.
The experienced Scotland centre-back arrived at Ibrox in January after falling out of favour at Norwich City with the hope of shoring up a defence which looked frequently shaky under interim boss Graeme Murty.
But Martin did not exactly have the desired effect. Rangers conceded 27 times in the 17 games in which the 32-year-old featured, including a 5-5 draw with Hibernian and 4-0 and 5-0 thrashings at Celtic.
Unsurprisingly, Rangers decided against offering Martin a contract when he was released by Norwich at the end of the season. In fact, no one has.
Five months after his final appearance for the Glasgow giants, the former Peterborough United man is still without a club.
Martin recently spent time on loan at West Brom but the Championship promotion hopefuls rejected the chance to sign him on a free transfer, as reported by the Express and Star. Martin’s former Norwich team-mate Wes Hoolahan, however, was snapped up by The Baggies to make matters worse.
There are a number of clubs in the Championship and League One who could benefit from a defender of Martin’s experience. But has that disappointing spell at Rangers severely damaged his reputation?
