Can Huddersfield Town be the surprise package this season under David Wagner?
Five games played, four victories and sitting top of the Championship in the opening month of the season – it has not been a bad start for Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner in his first season with a full pre-season behind him.
He has been able to bring in his own personnel and implement his ideas after taking over from former manager Chris Powell late last year.
Any manager would take great pride in how Claudio Ranieri masterminded the Premier League last season, and similar to Leicester City the Terriers have spent very little, with Christopher Schindler breaking the club’s transfer record for a fee believed to be around £1.8m.
Wagner could also take a leaf out of Brighton manager Chris Hughton’s book. Hughton steered the Seagulls away from relegation in the 2014-15 season and guided the club to third place last term despite a summer of small activity.
Hughton’s side were not expected to go the distance but he used that to his advantage to allow his side to go under the radar and play without pressure. Could Wagner do the same?
The former Borussia Dortmund II manager has looked to utilise his squad with minor additions, with young talents Kasey Palmer on loan from Chelsea and Jack Payne contributing to their fantastic start to the season.
The duo have both played major parts in the opening five games, and linked up to secure the winning goal against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
Many expect the likes of Norwich City, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Brighton, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County to occupy the top five or six positions but why can Huddersfield not be there?
