Tottenham have talked the talk, but it is Liverpool who are currently walking the walk.

Liverpool laid down the gauntlet to their rivals earlier this month by splashing out £75 million on defender Virgil van Dijk.

It was a bold move from the Reds, who have begun to spend big pro-actively, tying up an early deal for Mohamed Salah in the summer, and agreeing a move for Naby Keita to arrive next season.

One club who have ‘talked the talk’ are Tottenham Hotspur, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino making clear he wanted January signings last month, quoted by ESPN urging the club to be proactive.

Almost a month has passed since those comments, and Spurs are yet to make their move, while Liverpool have wasted no time.

Getting a deal over the line early would be a major statement from Spurs, but as supporters know by now, that simply isn’t chairman Daniel Levy’s style.

Levy will have to change this to keep Pochettino happy, and Everton’s Ross Barkley is one very attainable player who they could lure away at the right price.

It would not be surprise if Tottenham’s move for Barkley goes right down to the transfer deadline, and that would not be good for anybody involved.
