The former Everton midfielder has struggled with injury and opportunities since signing in 2010.
When Dan Gosling left Everton a couple of seasons back he left a disappointed club behind.
At only 19 he had become famous for scoring a crucial winning goal in extra-time against Merseyside rivals Liverpool, even though millions missed it on television as ITV’s coverage cut out at the crucial moment.
His departure, on a Bosman, left a sour taste for all concerned at Goodison who had hoped he would continue his career at the club.
Now aged 22, he may be inclined to reassess his career this summer, after a couple of years at Newcastle best described as ‘frustrating.’
He had to shake off a severe knee injury sustained prior to joining the Magpies, and only began training with the first team squad in November 2010, four months after signing for the club.
Signing for Newcastle upon their re-entry to the Premier League was supposed to lead to great things for him, but right after making his debut, he got injured again and missed the whole of last season.
This campaign he has fared a bit better, but not as well as he would have hoped.
He scored his first goal for the club in a defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad, a consolation in a 3-1 loss in November, but a month later was sent off against Norwich in a 4-2 loss.
He played against his former club Everton prior to that, but since the Norwich sending off he has only played a handful of minutes in the league, his longest appearance being a substitute for shortly over 20 minutes in the 5-0 loss to Tottenham.
Gosling has been unfortunate with injury, and the club knew this when they signed him, so it would be too early to write him off yet.
The good news is he is still fit, and remains an option for Alan Pardew, but should he look elsewhere in search of first team football?
Ahead of him in midfield are Cheik Tiote, Yohann Cabaye, Danny Guthrie, and it is likely the club will sign reinforcements in the summer.
It would probably be premature of the club to sell him, if any of the above three were to get injured he will certainly get playing time, especially with Haris Vuckic out on loan and Mehdi Abeid about to join him.
Gosling was rated highly at Everton and they were disappointed to see him go, all he needs is a run of games to establish himself again.
The question is, will he get that at Newcastle or should he look elsewhere.
I would encourage him to be patient at Newcastle and wait for his chance, but if it gets to next January and he is even further back in the queue for places, he should look for a loan move.
