Has Chelsea star’s comments, and Conte’s response, opened door to Everton switch?

Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas could be the ideal addition for Everton this summer.

Cesc Fabregas has played a peripheral role in Chelsea’s Premier League campaign so far this season, and his latest comments regarding Eden Hazard will not have done him any favours, especially after Antonio Conte’s fiery response.

The Spaniard told reporters how his teammate needs to become more selfish if he is to reach the heights of Lionel Messi, as quoted by the Mirror:

“Ability wise, there is only one player above him and we all know who he is: Messi. Ability-wise he’s up there with the best. I’ve told him many, many times, he needs to be selfish sometimes and have that killer instinct to score more goals and then he will be whatever he wants to be.”

Asked whether Fabregas had a point, Conte responded in bullish fashion, as quoted by the Metro:

“No, absolutely not. Because I don’t think a player like Messi is a selfish player. The best players in the world don’t exist without the team. For me, it’s sad when I listen to this: one player must be more selfish to reach the top level? This is not my ideal of football. I will never understand this. In my team I don’t want a selfish player, I’d prefer to lose a game than have a selfish player – I don’t want this and won’t accept this, never.”

The former Arsenal and Barcelona man is quite clearly already not one of the Italian’s preferred players, and Everton should take advantage of this by making a move for him in the summer.

The Toffees already have a remarkably strong midfield, but they do lack a certain level of creativity in the middle of the park. They have great strength-in-depth in the deep-lying midfield area, with he likes of Idrissa Gueye, Gareth Barry and Morgan Schneiderlin all competing for places.

The lack of a match winner in central areas though has led to Ronald Koeman’s side becoming overly reliant on Romlelu Lukaku as their main source of goals.

Ross Barkley provides something different, from a flair perspective, but he does not produce the goods on a consistent enough basis, and the addition of the 29-year-old Chelsea star would undoubtedly offer Everton something different in attacking areas.

He can be deployed in the number 10 role behind the main striker, or in a more deep-lying position from where he can dictate the tempo of the game.

With the West London outfit thought to be extremely interested in signing Lukaku, Fabregas could be used as bait in any kind of offer they make to the Merseysiders.

And if Everton can replace the Belgian with a world class striker, as well as adding the Spain international to their ranks, they could be in a much stronger position from which to challenge for the top four next season.
