Former Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce was heavily criticised for sending Andre Green on a loan spell to Portsmouth.

Aston Villa prospect Andre Green may well have explained Steve Bruce’s thinking behind one of his most controversial moves during his time in charge, through his comments in the Daily Mail.

Bruce let Green leave Villa in the summer on a season-long loan to Portsmouth, which sparked uproar with some supporters at Villa Park.

The bulk of claret and blues fans were keen to see Green stick around and compete for a spot in their first-team.

And Villa fans were quick to criticise Bruce for overlooking the wide-man, when he did agree to send him out on loan.

However, Green’s latest comments suggest that it was him that wanted the move away from Villa all along.

He said: “I like being with my family but I knew this move was needed for my career.

“I missed a few opportunities younger in my career when I could have went out on loan. I needed this move to get back to how I was last season before I had the hamstring surgery. It’s just for confidence and to help this team, what a great club it is.”

Green made a slow start with Pompey after picking up an injury, but the Villa youngster is starting to prove his worth now.

The wide-man scored Portsmouth’s winner in their FA Cup tie with Norwich City at the weekend, as Kenny Jackett’s side pulled off one of the shocks of the third round.
