Alan Hutton suffered a very serious injury for Aston Villa on Saturday.

“It doesn’t look good – it’s a knee injury”.

Those were the words of Aston Villa boss Dean Smith when asked about Alan Hutton’s injury on Saturday.

The Scottish right-back suffered an injury in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stoke City and was replaced after only seven minutes.

Smith’s post-match comments to Aston Villa’s official website seem ominous.

There are only 12 Championship games left for the Villans this season and it seems very probable that Hutton might’ve just played his last-ever game for the West Midlands side.

The 34-year-old, who joined Villa for £3.5 million in 2011 [The Telegraph], is out of contract this summer and it’s nigh-on impossible that he’ll earn an extension.

That means an absence of two months or more will render yesterday’s trip to Stoke as his last match.

Even if he isn’t out for that long – and that’s a pretty big if at this moment in time – his form for much of 2019 hasn’t exactly been stellar.

Nevertheless, Hutton, who took a major pay cut to stay with Aston Villa last summer [The Daily Record], has been a terrific servant for the club during the past eight years and no matter what some fans might think of him, surely he deserved a better send off.
