After their relegation to the Championship, many Aston Villa fans did not expect to every see striker Gabby Agbonlahor at Villa Park again. The striker was among a large group of Villa players who fans felt had let the former Champions League winning club down severely.
And under former boss Roberto Di Matteo, that looked to be the case. After failing to secure at exit from Villa Park, the striker appeared to be completely frozen out of the playing squad.
But all that appeared to be change when former Birmingham City manager, Steve Bruce, took charge. Making his first appearance in the first Birmingham City v Aston Villa fixture of the season, Gabby Agbonlahor had been offered a lifeline.
Since that date, the forward has gone on to make 12 appearances in total to date, and recently scored his first goal for the club since his “revival” – the winner against Birmingham City last weekend.
But after managing 90 minutes of football on just two occasions in that time, is Gabby Agbonlahor a sound investment when it comes to handing out big new contracts at Villa Park?

The reality of the situation now is that Gabriel Agbonlahor faces tough opposition when it comes to ever holding down a place in the future of this Aston Villa side. Behind Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan, Agbonlahor is the third choice striker at Villa Park currently, and at 30-years-old, the striker cannot be blamed for wanting to take advantage of first team football.
Whether Agbonlahor can ever get back to his best, is unlikely. However, perhaps under Steve Bruce, the former Villa Park hero can work hard to try and restore some of the status which held him beloved amongst the Aston Villa faithful.
