The Hoops legend cannot believe the Glasgow Rangers man got just a yellow in the Old Firm derby incident at Ibrox.
Celtic legend John Hartson has made his feelings very clear on Glasgow Rangers defender Jon Flanagan’s elbow on Hoops captain Scott Brown in Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox.
The full-back caught his opponent as Celtic were about to take a corner minutes into the second half of Rangers’ eventual 2-0 Scottish Premiership victory against Neil Lennon’s side.
Flanagan was booked by referee Kevin Clancy for his role in the incident but there has been widespread criticism of the decision with many believing a red card was necessary.
Indeed, Hartson has commented on the incident and, aside from being outraged over the decision to only book Flanagan, he joked about wishing he had officiated some of the matches in his career.
“How on earth referee Kevin Clancy saw the incident between Jon Flanagan and Scott Brown and decided that it merited just a yellow card is beyond me,” the Welshman wrote in the Glasgow Evening Times. “It’s just bewildering.
“I don’t want to make excuses, because Rangers were the better team and deserved their win, but it was a remarkable error. I’ve had a few red cards myself over the years for similar incidents, and I wish I had Kevin Clancy refereeing those games!”
Flanagan is set to face a disciplinary hearing and a two match ban over his elbow on Brown, the player being served with a notice of complaint after a three-man panel unanimously decided it was a red-card offence (BBC Sport).
The 26-year-old faces a hearing at Hampden on Thursday and, if found guilty, would miss this weekend’s game at Kilmarnock and the first league match of next term.
