Paul Merson has written on SportsKeeda that he has been left disappointed by Tottenham Hotspur player Emerson Royal.

The former Arsenal star has said that he expected more from Emerson, who is a right-back by trade but played as a right wing-back under Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte this past season.

The Sky Sports pundit has said although the Brazil international has been playing regularly under Conte, he has been a disappointment in the Premier League.

Merson wrote about Emerson on SportsKeeda: “This might be a bit of a harsh one, but I thought Emerson Royal was going to be better than he was.

“He played every week under Antonio Conte, but he never managed to meet expectations in the Premier League.”

Staying patient

In our view, the Tottenham Hotspur management and fans need to be patient with Emerson Royal.

After all, he is only 23 and joined Tottenham from Barcelona in the summer of 2021.

There is a very good chance that the Brazilian will prove that the £25.8 million (BBC Sport) transfer fee that Tottenham spent on him last summer was worth it.

It is not easy for any player, especially for someone as young as Emerson, to play as a right wing-back when he is used to playing as a right-back.

A good pre-season with Conte could help the youngster understand his role better and make a bigger impact at Tottenham next season.

Emerson made 26 starts and five substitute appearances in the Premier League for Spurs this past season, scoring one goal and giving one assist in the process.
