Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur lost to Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Thursday.
Winks made the admission following Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final tie on Thursday evening.
The tie ended 2-2 on aggregate, and the Blues won the penalty shootout 4-2 to progress to the final.
Tottenham midfielder Winks, 22, has admitted that he and his teammates did not practice penalty kicks ahead of the game on Thursday evening.
When asked whether they practised penalties, Winks told The Daily Mail: “No. We don’t really work on penalties. It’s like the manager said, sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t.
“We beat Watford on penalties and never worked on them. Unfortunately on this occasion, it’s football. It wasn’t our night on penalties but that’s the nature of the game.”

Penalty shootouts are like lottery, but Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino should have still made sure that the players practised them ahead of the game on Thursday evening.
After all, there was always the chance that the tie could go into a shootout, as it eventually did.
Was it short-sightedness from Pochettino? Or was it complacency from the Tottenham boss?
Perhaps if the Spurs players had practised penalty kicks, then they would have won the shootout and advanced to the final of the EFL Cup.
