Harry Winks has told Tottenham Hotspur’s official website that Liverpool didn’t deserve to beat them in Saturday’s Champions League final.

Liverpool picked up a sixth European Cup title by edging out Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid.

Mo Salah fired home a first-minute penalty after Moussa Sissoko was adjudged to have blocked Sadio Mane’s cross with his hand in the box, before Divock Origi rifled home a second in the closing stages.

The scoreline doesn’t tell the full story in a game where Spurs had 64% possession and eight shots on target, compared to the Reds’ three – two of which were goals.

Tottenham certainly had the better goalscoring chances, and Winks has claimed to the North Londoners’ official website that he and his team-mates deserved the victory.

“In my opinion, of course I’m biased, I believe we should have won but I’m so proud of everyone. It’s been an incredible run for us.

“We gave it a real go, created chances and on another day, we win. It’s an unfortunate one and all I can say is the way we recovered after the early penalty was fantastic. The character of this squad cannot be questioned.”

Both teams had enjoyed fairytale comebacks in the semi-final stage to reach Madrid. Liverpool overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit to Barcelona by smashing them 4-0 in Anfield, while Mauricio Pochettino’s side scored three second-half goals in Amsterdam to beat Ajax on the away goal rule.
