Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester City were all involved in a number of drama-filled Champions League games last season.

Harry Redknapp has claimed that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola wouldn’t be able to guide a Brighton, Sheffield United or Norwich into the top-six if they had to work with their players.

Former Spurs boss Redknapp was making reference to his old side, the poor start they have made to the new season, and the troubles Pochettino is currently facing with the current crop of players at his disposal.

Whilst Liverpool have won all their encounters in the Premier League this season, Pochettino has seen his side suffer a number of damaging defeats – from Colchester United to Bayern Munich.

Redknapp defended Pochettino despite his poor start and made it clear that the manager in the dugout is only ‘as good as his players’, as he stated what would happen if any of the top managers were to manage a team lower down the table.

“You’re as good as your players,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail. “Graham Taylor once said ‘your manager is never as good as you think he is and he’s never as bad as you think he is, he’s somewhere in-between’ and that is football management.

“If you put Pochettino, or you put Pep [Guardiola] or [Jurgen] Klopp and let them go and manage Brighton or manage Norwich or Sheffield United, they’re not gonna go and put them in the top six, it doesn’t work that way.

“It’s about the players. He [Pochettino] has got the good players but at the moment there have been hiccups – one of two of them are not playing to their real potential or as good as they can.”

As Pochettino proved with Southampton, he is capable of doing a very solid job with a team outside of the top-six, but given the differences in finances and players, breaking into that top-six would be doubly difficult.

Pochettino earned his way into the Spurs job by the work he did at St Mary’s, whilst Klopp worked wonders during his time with Dortmund in Germany.

Both reached the Champions League final last season, with Klopp coming out as the winner, but it is Guardiola who is winning things on the domestic front.
