Harry Redknapp has told TalkSPORT that he believes Aston Villa should never have fired Tim Sherwood.

It is almost 12 months since Sherwood was given the boot by Villa, who have since been through two permanent managers.

Remi Garde’s replacement Roberto Di Matteo was fired yesterday after a dismal start to the season, winning just one league game.

Villa suffered relegation last season and sit in 19th position, 10 points away from the last play-off spot, currently occupied by rivals Birmingham City.

Redknapp, who worked above Sherwood at Tottenham, told TalkSPORT that he believes the club would be in a better position now if they kept faith with him.

He said: “Getting rid of Tim Sherwood was a massive mistake. I think they need someone in there given time.

“They can’t keep changing managers every six months or so, and that’s the way it’s gone at the moment.

“It’s sad, because they’ve got great support. Every week they’re there, the fans. They follow the team away, and they deserve better.”

In Villa’s defence, they were taken over in the summer, and Di Matteo is the first manager to be fired by current owner Tony Xia.

It is hard to condemn him for the actions of the previous regime, and clearly it was not working under the Italian.

The next appointment is key, and Villa should not rush into making the wrong appointment, with an experienced manager likely required in order to get the club back on track.
