West Ham United are looking for a strong end to Manuel Pellegrini’s first season in charge.

Harry Redknapp looks on before the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium on January 31, 2018 in London, England.

Ex-West Ham United boss Harry Redknapp has told the Daily Star that he thinks the Hammers will finish ‘eighth or ninth’ this season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side came from 3-1 down to beat Huddersfield Town 4-3 on Saturday afternoon, recovering from a 2-0 defeat at Cardiff City.

That kind of sums up West Ham; maddeningly inconsistent. Home wins over Manchester United and Arsenal are great, but there have been concerning results along the way.

Pellegrini will feel some progress has been made in his first season in the job, and he will be looking to kick on again this summer with plenty of players expected to come and go.

West Ham currently sit ninth in the Premier League table, just two points behind Wolves in the race for seventh place and a Europa League qualifying spot.

That has to be the goal for West Ham this season, given how close they are, but ex-boss Redknapp doesn’t think they’ll make it.

Redknapp suggests that West Ham will finish ‘eighth or ninth’ this season, though he wants to see them push for seventh like all connected to the Hammers.

Redknapp added that he thinks Pellegrini is doing a ‘decent job’, but things West Ham lack characters – and admitting that he doesn’t even know who half of their players are at this point.

“Yeah he’s done a decent job, I thought David Moyes had done a good job last year you know.” said Redknapp. “They’re sort of in the same type of position, I think they’ll finish around about eighth or ninth. They’ve had good results but they’ve been up and down, they’ve been inconsistent. They’ve beat the big teams at times, and then they’ve had bad results like at Cardiff. I really expected them to go to Cardiff and get a good result.”

“I’d like to see them finish seventh or eighth this year if they can. I like Pellegrini, he’s a good man, but the team is where it is now, unfortunately they lack consistency. It’s hard to put your finger on it, I don’t know. It’s a difficult one, I don’t know who the characters are, who the leaders are at the football clubs. It’s a changing world. I’ll be honest I don’t even know half the players there anymore [at West Ham]. They seem to have lots of foreign imports in and then go,” he added.
