Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has been backed for a stunning season at Ibrox next term.

Harry Redknapp keeps dry under an umbrella prior to the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and West Ham United at Selhurst Park on October 15, 2016 in London, England.

Harry Redknapp has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Jermain Defoe can score 40 goals for Rangers next season.

The Gers already had one deadly striker in Alfredo Morelos, but Steven Gerrard clearly felt that he needed one more during the January transfer window.

He managed to pull off a huge coup, taking Bournemouth striker Defoe on an 18-month loan deal, reuniting with the forward having played together for England.

Defoe, now 36, may not be the player he once was, but he will always pose a goal threat, and that has certainly been the case with Rangers so far.

Defoe has racked up seven goals in 17 appearances for Rangers, meaning Morelos may not even get his starting spot back when he returns from suspension.

The veteran will be hoping for a strong pre-season and a key role under Gerrard next season, especially with his former Portsmouth and Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp bigging him up.

Jermain Defoe of Rangers controls the ball during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premier League match between Rangers and Dundee at Ibrox Stadium on February 27, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Redknapp has been staggeringly predicted that Defoe can score 40 goals next season, believing that there is no doubt that Defoe has the ability to hit that milestone as he’s an ‘amazing finisher’.

“Of course, he could score 40 goals next season,” said Redknapp. “Without a doubt. Jermain will always score goals. He has such amazing movement and he is an amazing finisher. Given the chance he will stick them away and I’d expect him to do that next season. He will play for another two seasons yet given he is in such good shape,” he added.

Jermain Defoe of Rangers arrives ahead of the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Hibernian and Rangers at Easter Road on March 08, 2019 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
