Joe Gomez is apparently frustrated with life at Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League leaders Liverpool with Tottenham Hotspur a potential destination.

(THE SUN OUT, THE SUN ON SUNDAY OUT) Brendan Rodgers manager of Liverpool talks with Joe Gomez during a training session at Melwood Training Ground on August 15, 2015 in Liverpool, England.

It didn’t take long for Harry Redknapp to spot Joe Gomez’s potential. Or, for that matter, that Brendan Rodgers was failing to get the best out of a youngster who had only moved to Anfield from Charlton Athletic a matter of weeks earlier.

In Gomez’s first few games for the Merseyside giants, he was being forced to fill in at left-back. And, speaking to the Telegraph in September 2015, Redknapp felt the teenager’s qualities were being wasted in an ill-fitting role.

“The left-back (Gomez) is a good young player who can’t kick with his left foot but he is playing at left-back. He’s a fantastic talent, strong, quick. But what will he give you on the left? He is on the wrong side,” said the former Tottenham manager.

Four years on, you can probably count the amount of times Gomez has started at left-back for Liverpool on one hand. Jurgen Klopp has transformed one of Rodgers’ most inspired signings into a top centre-half – one of the finest in the Premier League on his day.

Gomez made great strides under Klopp in the first half of last season but he’s struggled to displace Joel Matip since suffering a broken ankle. And 90Min claims that the England international’s frustrations could play into Tottenham’s hands with Mauricio Pochettino’s side identifying Gomez as the perfect addition should Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen bid farewell to North London next summer.

And this is a deal which will certainly get Redknapp’s seal of approval. After all, he knew just what a special player Gomez was all the way back in 2015 – even if he looked a little lost at left-back.
