Former West Ham United manager Harry Redknapp has delivered a rather abrupt verdict on Michail Antonio.
The Hammers have turned their season around in the last two months with five wins from seven in the Premier League.
And it could have been even better for Slaven Bilic’s side had they got what they deserved out of two defeats to Leicester City and Manchester United in that time.
The East Londoners are up to 10th in the table and are on the coattails of the top seven following a 3-1 win at Middlesbrough on Saturday.
West Ham United’s Michail Antonio celebrates
The game saw another assist for Hammers hero Michail Antonio, who further cemented his place in supporters’ hearts by pulling himself off his sickbed to provide three assists in the 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace the week before.
Antonio is West Ham’s top scorer this season and was the third highest scoring Englishman in 2016.
He was called up to two of the last three England squads under Sam Allardyce and then Gareth Southgate but was snubbed by the latter for the last internationals of 2016.
BT Sport’s Harry Redknapp
That angered Hammers fans who love Antonio’s all action, committed style and attitude.
And former West Ham winger and manager Harry Redknapp will have angered them further with his assessment of Antonio’s future England chances on BT Sport.
Asked whether Antonio should be called up by England a glum-faced Redknapp abruptly said: “No.”
When pushed to elaborate, Redknapp added: “He wouldn’t get in my England team no.”
Hammers legend and coach Julian Dicks, who played under Redknapp, recently hit out saying West Ham players are always being overlooked for the national side.
